Dave Shuttleworth

Dave has worked in marketing, journalism and PR for almost 20 years. He has a nose for news and enjoys a challenge.

Before training as a reporter with the Somerset County Gazette, he spent several years managing and marketing Odeon cinemas. He also freelanced as a film and TV critic for various newspapers, magazines and radio stations, including BBC Somerset Sound and Gemini FM.

After a solid grounding in newspapers, he joined Somerset Wildlife Trust as communications and PR manager. There, he led successful campaigns to raise money to protect the countryside and biodiversity, as well as raising awareness of the charity’s conservation work and helping increase membership by 20% in just 18 months. He was also involved in media strategy for The Wildlife Trusts regionally and nationally, including dealing with difficult issues such as wind farms and badger culling.

Dave’s next move was to the culture and heritage sector, as Head of External Relations for MLA South West, where he enjoyed promoting and supporting the ‘s museums, libraries and archives. His work there included developing a communications strategy for the Government’s “Renaissance” programme of investment in museums in Bournemouth, Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth and Truro.

In September 2008, Dave joined the newly merged North and East Devon Colleges. As Head of Marketing and Communications, his role included spearheading the college’s rebranding project and working with Interbrand to create Petroc. The rebrand generated national publicity and was among the winners of the Transform Awards 2010. More importantly, it gave the college a vibrant and robust new identity which has ensured that Petroc continues to successfully attract students to its Barnstaple and Tiverton campuses.

After a brief spell working for the NHS in his home county of Somerset, Dave joined the Cake team in early 2014.
